Celsus Biomat

The new Life-Science company Celsus-Biomat B.V. is uniquely qualified to service the biomedical industry. The company combines know-how on heparin, heparin production, thrombosis, and biomaterials science. Celsus-Biomat B.V. will be licensed a proprietary antithrombotic agent for use as a bioactive component in drug eluting stents and other medical devices.
Our corporate partner, Celsus Biomedical B.V., is a Maastricht-based sister-company of Celsus Laboratories Inc. (Cincinatti, OH, USA). Celsus Laboratories is a leading producer and global supplier of various heparin derived active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) intended for further manufacture into parenteral drug products and for use as bioactive components in medical devices In support of its global strategy, Celsus Laboratories maintains drug master file credentials with regulatory authorities in Australia, Canada, the European Union, Japan, and the United States. Celsus pipeline of new API's includes (i) Enoxaparin Sodium, a biosimilar version of the API in Sanofi-Aventis' blockbuster injectable drug, Lovenox® / Clexane®, and (ii) Dermatan 4,6-O-disulfate, tradenamed Intimatan™, a proprietary heparin cofactor II agonist, that is unique in its ability to inhibit surface-bound thrombin and platelet activation in the presence of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) antibodies, both life-threatening medical conditions where heparin is counter indicated. The latter compond has been licensed to Celsus-Biomat for use as a component in drug eluting stents and other biomedical applications.
Other principals in Celsus-Biomat are Drs. Aldenhoff and Koole. They have direct links to Maastricht University Medical Centre Plus (MUMC+) and introduce expertise of (i), blood-biomaterial interactions, (ii), hydrophilic and bioactive surface coatings for medical devices, and (iii) use of smart biomaterials in strategies for controlled local drug delivery.
The activities of Celsus-Biomat B.V. can be summarized as follows:

• Production of heparin solutions (also in volatile organic solvents, such as isopropanol) for use in the medical device industry.
• Consultancy on the use of heparin in medical device coatings. Knowledge on heparin. Assessment of heparin activity. Release of heparin from medical device coatings.
• Production of hydrophilic surface coatings for medical devices, particularly SlipSkin®.
• Consultancy on hydrophilic coatings for medical devices. Assessment of the biocompatibility, and relevant physical properties (such as lubricity).
• Production of heparin-containing and heparin-releasing surface coatings for medical devices. Design, manufacture and testing. Consultancy.
• Assessment of bloodcompatibility of biomaterials (e.g. surface-coated medical devices) using fresh human whole blood and state-of-the-art methods, such as thrombin generation (static and under flow conditions), analysis of interactions of biomaterial surface and blood-cells. Scanning electron microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry.
• Production of fluorogenic and chromogenic substrates for the analysis of blood coagulation.
• Synthesis of polymeric biomaterials, cytotoxicity tests, assessment of biocompatibility using in vitro and in vivo models.
• Design and synthesis of novel radiopaque biomaterials in different forms, such as (i), cements (for applications in orthopedic surgery, spinal surgery and dental surgery) and (ii) microspheres (for applications in urology, cosmetic surgery, reconstructive surgery, and embolization); (iii), nanoparticles.
