Miortech® develops and will produce and market auto dimming rear view mirrors based on the electrowetting display technology invented at Philips Research. Miortech B.V. is founded in 2006 as spin-off of Liquavista, the company commercialising the electrowetting display technology for mobile applications. Miortech is located at the High Tech Campus Eindhoven, The Netherlands, in an environment with the experts from Philips Research and numerous other high tech companies. Miortech uses the MiPlaza facilities such as advanced cleanrooms and has trained engineers for technology development with many years experience in the industrialisation of display technology. Miortech works with leading display manufacturers in Asia making use of the existing LCD mass manufacturing processes. Miortech has introduced the AlertMirror®, an auto dimming rear view mirror displaying alerts such as “fuel low” at the most natural place in a car cockpit: the rear view mirror. The driver looks in the rear view mirror on average every 15 seconds which makes it an important component in the human-machine interface. Modern cars are equipped with auto dimming rearview mirrors which automatically turn dark when headlights of cars coming from behind cause glare. Today's mirrors, based on electrochromic technology, respond slowly when headlights suddenly appear from behind and drivers are still blinded for a brief moment. This may lead to an unsafe situation. The AlertMirror from Miortech is able to turn dark in milliseconds avoiding the unsafe situation. The AlertMirror comes in different dark colors enabling designers to match the rear view mirror to the color of the car’s interior.
